Although his exact age is not known, Morpius -- a codename that amuses Prince Kheldon -- knew of and observed humanity years before he became part of it. In the early part of 1950, he revealed himself to the U.S. government by landing his spaceship in a New Mexico desert and asking for political asylum from his home planet, Dirge. Leaked scenarios from this first contact is said to have inspired the movie "The Day The Earth Stood Still".

According to Prince Kheldon, the aristocracy and rolay family on Dirge was based on the individual's shapeshifting abilities. Those who were the most facile shapeshifters lead the planet until they were massacred in a coup backed by a rival planet Dargossa, whose theocracy insisted shapeshifting was blasphemy and an affront to the Gods. Prince Kheldon and his sister managed to escape Dirge in separate vehicles, but he witnessed her ship destroyed by pursuing Dargossans. His ship was fired upon as well, causing the navigation system to fail. Having no time for repairs, he hypered to our solar system at the beginning of Grecian civilization. In high orbit, he observed our planet and visited on occasion. His early attempts to shapeshift to the forms of our alien culture may have given rise to legends of mythological beasts.

Morphius shows no sign of aging but his shapeshifting may mitigate it. Although his powers do not appear to be limited to specific forms, he favors certain ones in honor of ritual combats practiced on Dirge. He can change his color and other cosmetics, such as hair, but it taxes him greatly to create such detail. Usually his forms have the same ebony appearance that he has naturally. He is an accurate shot from a distance and melee weapons, but he eschews them unless necessary, viewing the use of tools combat as a dishonor to his opponents.

Kept a secret from the public for years, the government made him part of the Obsidian Enforcers. He has shown an interest in Azrael and Azrael's commitment to honor. Although the Deathangel's attitude toward change frustrates Morphius, he considers Azrael his best friend.
